Winter is here

Well we have reached one of the slower times at the garden center.  Not a whole lot going on.  Dad and I attended the Minnesota Green Expo this past week. It is a large convention with educational sessions for everyone involved in the green industry, landscapers, garden centers, golf course turf managers, florists, a little bit of everything.

There are several projects that I will be working on here during the winter months.  There will also be lots of cleaning.  Junk mail will be sorted and recycled.  Neglected dust will be dusted.  Nooks and crannies will be swept.  Spring will be here soon enough.

We'll be open normal hours so  stop in and smell the plants.  It's so refreshing on a cold winter day to know that there are things still green and blooming!

Sunlight in the greenhouse

Its days like today that drive me nuts.  It seems like we have left winters dreariness behind, the sun is out, it looks warm, and then you step outside to a cold shock! If only there was a way to fast forward our weather.  In the greenhouse though it is a beautiful

Well that wasn't too bad

Well last night's snow was more off a nuisance than anything, think we got about 2 inches here in town.  It should mostly be melted by tomorrow, and our lawns and fields can use that extra moisture. Theresa is busy again in the greenhouse today, those plants are getting a little bigger each day.

Baby plants

The girls are busy in the greenhouse planting each day.  Three or four times a week these small plug trays arrive.  Theresa will quickly get them planted into containers or hanging baskets.  In a couple weeks we should be able to plant outdoors!! In the meantime the greenhouse becomes a welcome respite from our never ending Minnesota Winter

Seeds are all here ready to be planted.  Think I am going to start some tomatoes in the upcoming days for my personal use.  I am literally to the point of hair pulling madness, this winter will not end.  Even on days like today where there is a sense of spring in the air, it just isn't enough.

Guess what? It's snowing again

Well it had been several days since the last snow so I guess we were due for this latest 4 inches of headache.  I do snow removal for a few places here in St. Peter and for the most part it is actually quite fun.  I especially like these late night snow events, hopefully the snow will taper off here shortly and then I can go out and do my plowing and shoveling and be done in two hours or so.  This leads to a great night of sleep.  As much as I loved it in December it has slowly lost its luster as we head into spring.  Oh well.  At least it's Taco Tuesday!!

Continuing Education...

20140226_141344.jpg

Just like many of you, I enjoy the occasional learning opportunity.  Today in a conference room in the bowels of MNDOT's St. Cloud office I had the time of my life learning and I quote "the Inspection and Contract Administration for MNDOT Landscape Projects." If you like red tape and bureaucracy today was like having pancakes and bacon brought to you in bed.  I did learn a lot, all the speakers were knowledgeable and fun to listen to.  It's all part of a certification process that you need in order to bid on jobs for MNDOT.  They did have tasty sandwiches and Diet Cokes for lunch so I can't complain. Plus I got a really cool binder!

We're back...

Well its been a long time since I have been blogging, I think 5 years and two websites ago! So tonight is a great night to start.  You might see that we have updated the website a little. Its taking a little bit of time to do, but is kind of fun, I'll keep plugging away at it a little at a time.  I'll try to get back to blogging here, too.  It's a much easier setup than the last time, so sitting down to write a few words shouldn't be such a chore.  Once again I'll try to mix garden center with some fun things.  Hope you'll make it a point to stop by once in awhile.

Cheers, Karl
